The Highway Code As most of you will be aware the traffic in North Cyprus drives on the left hand side the same as the United Kingdom. Until recently this was probably the only similarity to the experience of driving in the UK! This year has seen a few changes that may be more familiar to your daily routine when you are out and about on the roads where you live. First of all is the introduction of five speed cameras along the road from Kyrenia travelling west to Lapta. Now we are all becoming used to the speed up , slow down for the camera, speed up again procession along the road. Most motorists being a tad unsure on how reliable the new technology is tend to slow down to a speed much less than the prescribed limit which for four of the cameras is 65 kph and one at 50 kph this has tended to make the journeys along the road a little longer. Recently also the police have been more in evidence conducting roadside vehicle and document checks. Its become a discipline now to always travel with all your documents in the car just to avoid a trip to the station to produce them at a later date and joining the inevitable queue of people waiting to do the same thing. We have also just experienced a hike in Road Tax Licence fees so we now know how the speed cameras are being paid for. So the saving graces are that there is a lot less traffic on the roads here compared to the UK , the scenery of mountains and sea helps suppress any thoughts of road rage and you will never have to scrape ice from your window screen again. | |
