SPORTS AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES
SPORTS IN NORTH CYPRUS
Football is the main sporting pastime in the TRNC, dominating the TV at the appropriate season and football pitches during weekends. Local North Cyprus teams compete for an array of trophies and cups. Basketball is the second national sport in Northern Cyprus, with a large following and again, many competitions.
Karate or Taek-Wan-Do is very popular in the TRNC, with weekly meetings at training centres in the Northern Cyprus towns.
Diving, windsurfing, sailing and other water sports are available from many North Cyprus hotels and local firms.
Tennis courts are accessible at many large hotels in TRNC. There are no organised clubs to speak of.
The waters off the coast of Northern Cyprus offer main types of fish for the willing fisherman. Fishing trips can be easily organised from the local Kyrenia harbour.
BOATING AND YACHTING
While more and more facilities are becoming available in the TRNC for professional and amateur sailors alike, we suggest that you consult a specialist upon these matters, as local law and maritime regulations in Northern Cyprus are constantly changing. If coming from abroad it is preferred that these consultation of specialist is done before you enter North Cyprus waters, or dock.
HOBBIES
For hobbies and pastimes such as painting, bird watching, walking, etc., refer to the local English newspapers or the notice board outside Girne/Kyrenia post office for listings of activities and events in Northern Cyprus. Most newspapers are only published once a week and usually a new copy can be bought on Friday or Saturday. Currently there is only one Daily paper in Northern Cyprus which is published in English. There also is a daily paper that comes from Turkey but it is normally a day old as papers that come from abroad can be a day or older.
